About Us

The Faculty of Letters is one of the oldest and largest faculties of our university with a 38-year history and more than 6000 students. The Faculty, which was established in accordance with the paragraph (a) of the article 25 of the Decree Law numbered 41, published in the Official Gazette dated July 20,1982 and numbered 17768, started education with the departments of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Turkish Language and Literature in the 1984-1985 Academic Year. According to the decision of the Council of Ministers dated February 5 2010, the Faculty was closed, and it was decided to establish the Faculties of Science and Letters separately. The relevant decision came into force in the Official Gazette dated March 4, 2010 and numbered 27511. In the Faculty of Letters, which started its educational activities on March 4, 2010 as a newly-established faculty, there are following departments: In the Faculty of Letters, which started its educational activities as a new educational unit on March 4, 2010, there are following departments: Turkish Language and Literature, History, History of Art, Turkish Folklore, Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy, English Language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature, Eastern Languages and Literatures (Japanese Language and Literature, Chinese Language and Literature, Korean Language and Literature, Armenian Culture and Literature, Hebrew Culture and Literature, Indology, Arabic Language and Literature, Persian Language and Literature, Urdu Language and Literature), Caucasian Languages and Cultures. Since its establishment, the Faculty of Letters has had an increasing capacity of students and academic staff. As of 2022, 14 programs with students. Among these programs, there are also evening education programs in the departments of English Language and Literature, Korean Language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature, History of Art, Sociology, History, Turkish Language and Literature. The number of students in the Faculty of Letters reached 6336 in the 2020 academic year. In total, 175 academic staff members, 26 of whom are from international countries and 149 are the citizens of the Republic of Türkiye, work in the Faculty of Letters.

Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Library
Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Library, with its 36.000 books and a free study room with computers, is an important research and study area for academics and students. Within the library, there are various works in the fields of Chinese Language and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, Korean Language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature, Philosophy, Sociology, History, Turkish Language and Literature and Turkish Folklore. The Faculty of Letters is a building with a closed area of 25.000 m2, which is composed of the Dean’s office, rooms of academic staff members, conference hall, library, classrooms, and social areas. The Faculty, which is the winner of the Turkish Council of Higher Education (YÖK) Orange Flag award, also provides accessibility to disabled students.
