Department of Turkish Language and Literature

The Department of Turkish Language and Literature, which was established in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Erciyes University in 1983, is one of the first departments of the faculty. Department, it was established by Prof. Dr. Meserret Diriöz in accordance with the relevant part of the law of establishing departments of higher education and has rapidly moved to academic structuring in all units of science. The department, which started accepting students from the year it was founded, had its first graduates in 1987; it continued to provide education and training services to more students who changed to dual education in 1993. The Faculty of Literature and Sciences was divided into two as Science and Literature in 2010. The Department of Turkish Language and Literature continued its activities within the Faculty of Literature.
A four-year undergraduate program is implemented in the department. In order for our students to be eligible for graduation at the end of these four years, they must take 240 ECTS and be successful in these courses.
Currently, about 900 students are given undergraduate education in our program. Our students who have completed their undergraduate education have the right to receive graduate and doctorate education in our graduate programs affiliated with the Social Sciences Institute (Modern Turkish Language, Modern Turkish Literature, Old Turkish Literature, Folklore, Old Turkic Language and Contemporary Turkish Dialects and Literatures) after providing the necessary conditions (ALES grade, foreign language grade, graduation grade, interview grade, etc.).
Who are qualified in their fields with their academic studies and in proportion to the number of our students our successful teachers give lectures in Turcology. Each of our teachers has presented papers dozens of times in national and international scientific meetings, prepared articles in various journals, and managed to make their names known with their book publications. Our academic staff continues its educational activities with 9 Professors, 3 Associate Professors, 2 Doctoral Lecturers, and 3 Research Assistants.
Turkish Language and Literature is a section that examines the general structure of the Turkish language, its developmental stages in history, its connection with other languages, and the history of Turkish literature from the past to the present with its oral and written works. It is the most sacred mission of our department to teach language and literature, one of the most important values of a nation, to Turkish youth and to raise a generation with national sensitivities in this sense. While fulfilling this mission, national and international symposiums in which our students are actively involved, conferences and panels on scientific and cultural issues, poetry recitals, and social responsibility programs are frequently organized and the studies are published. These activities provide our students with the opportunity to see and get to know the teachers- each more valuable than the other.
Our students graduating from our department can work in schools depending on the Ministry of National Education with pedagogical formation training. In addition, our students can serve Turkish language and literature or related departments as an academician as they can have work opportunities.
General Information:
To graduate from our program, 240 ECTS lectures must be completed. Some of these credits are earned successfully from compulsory and some elective lectures. In the undergraduate education of our department, lectures are given on a semester basis. There are two semesters in each academic year, fall and spring. A semester usually progresses as lecture registration, 14-week lecture period, end-of-year exam period. Dates are indicated in the Academic Calendar.
Absenteeism:
Students are required to attend 70% of the lectures. At the end of the semester, absent students are reported to the Dean's Office and marked as absent in the system. In case of absenteeism, the student loses the right to take the end-of-year exams. On OBISIS, your attendance status for each course is shown as follows: G (attendance required), D (absent), and M (excluded from attendance).
Lectures:
There are compulsory and elective lectures as lecture types. Compulsory lectures are the lectures that the student must complete to graduate. Elective lectures are offered in certain packages. The lecture is completed with the credit specified in the elective course package in the relevant year and term in the education plan. The package credits must be completed, not the course is taken in the package.
Lecture Registration:
Each semester, students choose the lectures they need to take within the period specified in the academic calendar through OBISIS and send them to their advisors for approval. The OBISIS program shows the required lectures in blue, the successful lectures in green, and the failed lectures in red. The student chooses the lectures that are required to be taken in the relevant year according to certain priorities. The choice of the remaining lectures or the lectures taken from the lower level has priority. The student, who is enrolled in the lectures in his/her term, can choose a course from the upper class if appropriate. It is necessary to pay attention to the warnings and directions of the consultants in this regard.
The elective lectures offered during the semester are announced to the students by the advisors during the lecture registration period. Among these lectures, students choose lectures according to their interests and needs.
There may be those that are not opened during the lecture registration week of the following year, among the remaining elective lectures. In this case, the system shows you the lecture table that can be taken instead. It is important to take lessons from the relevant package and year instead of the lecture in this table. If you are unsure, do not hesitate to ask your advisor.
Do not forget that your advisors may send you messages during the lecture registration and add-quit weeks, there may be errors in your lecture registration or changes may be required, and check the relevant messages at regular intervals. Note that changes may still be required after your lecture registrations have been approved.
Who is the Advisor?:
Your advisors are the people who will guide you about your education life. He/She guides you about the lectures you have taken during the lecture registration period. He/She is the person you should contact for problems you may experience outside of lecture registration. He/She provides communication between the chair of the department and the student.
Office (Advisor) Hours:
Each of the instructors working in our faculty arranges consultation hours for students on a certain day and time of the week. These hours can be used to get opinions on any subject or to convey your problems, unlike consultancy. Office (Advisor) hours are stated in the programs or lecture syllabuses at the office doors. Do not hesitate to ask questions via e-mail if necessary.
Exams:
Exams are indispensable elements of lecture evaluation. The common form is the midterm exam and year-end exams. However, in some lectures, lecture evaluation can be done with different methods such as homework, projects, presentations. How it will be evaluated will be communicated to you at the beginning of the semester. Your participation in the lecture is important here. Pay attention to how the assessment will be made, especially in the lectures that you failed in the previous semesters and did not have to attend. Remember that it is your responsibility to be aware of the requirements.
The date of the midterm exams is decided and announced by the Faculty Administrative Board. Although the 8th and 9th weeks are usually reserved for exams, this situation may change considering the special circumstances and public holidays that year. During the exam week, classes can be interrupted, or classes and exams are carried out together.
Adjustment:
To count the lectures that you have been successful in your previous education, you need to open an adjustment registration. As a workflow, you must apply to the student administration office and register with a document or documents showing your grade level and grade scale. Then, you must enter the lectures you want to be exempted from and send them to the system for approval. You have to send the lecture content and documents showing your grades to the members of the adjustment commission specified in the system. After the commission convenes and makes a decision, you can access the adjustment report on OBISIS.
Summer School:
At the end of the spring semester, the departments decide whether the lectures will be opened in the summer school or if they will be opened, which lectures they will be, and these decisions are announced in the relevant places. Students who want to take the lecture may be asked to make a pre-application. According to the number of applications, whether the lecture will be opened or not will be determined and announced.
To take lectures from other universities, first of all, the list of universities accepted by your department is examined. A protocol showing the lecture to be taken from accepted universities and the lecture corresponding to the lecture to be taken in your department is prepared by your department. This document is required to ensure your adjustment if you are successful in the lecture at the other university. If you are successful in the lectures you have taken, you must come to our university and start the adjustment process.
Discipline:
In the case of detection of negative behavior specified in the disciplinary regulation, investigation of disciplinary will be opened by the provisions of the relevant regulation.
