The Department of Korean Language and Literature was established in 1998. It admitted its first students in the 2003-2004 academic year. A total of twelve lecturers including a professor, an associate professor, five research assistants with PhD, a professor from South Korea, a lecturer with PhD and three lecturers are working in the department. In addition, the lecturers working in the Department actively carry out activities such as preparing textbooks, translating, supporting project execution, carrying out projects, and serving as thesis advisors. The student quota is 25, but with the increasing interest in Korea every year, this number exceeds 40. The evening undergraduate education program in the department was first opened in the 2012-2013 academic year in Türkiye. In the same year, 34 students were admitted to this program. In order to graduate from the department, it is obligatory to successfully pass the courses with a total of 240 credits. Since the opening of the department, a total of 369 students have graduated. Currently, there are 358 students in total; 191 in daytime education and 167 in evening education. Graduates are entitled to receive Bachelor’s Degree at the end of 4 years (8 semesters). In the 2019-2020 academic year, the base score for the daytime education was 345,40. For the evening education, it was 315,41. Master’s Degree and PhD education are also provided within the Institute of Social Sciences. In the 2010-2011 academic year, a Master's Degree program in the field of Korean Language and Literature was opened for the first time in Türkiye. There are still 18 students in the master's program and 12 of them are at the thesis stage, and the first graduates were in 2014. In addition, in the 2014-2015 academic year, PhD program was opened, and a student was enrolled in the program. Currently, there are 10 students in the doctoral program, 1 of whom is a graduate and 5 of whom are at the thesis stage, There are approximately 4000 Korean and Korean-related resources in the faculty library of our department, which the faculty members and students can benefit from. In addition, there are enough VCDs, DVDs and similar materials about Korea. Our department had its first graduates in June 2007. Graduates of the department can work as professional tourist guides, managers in travel agencies, academicians at universities and also have the opportunity to work in THY large Korean companies that invest in Turkey (Hyundai, Kia, SK, Posco, LG, Samsung, etc.) or companies that have commercial relations with Korea. As a department, necessary studies are carried out so that students can find a job after graduation. Apart from this, studies are carried out to increase the opportunities for the students who continue their education to do internship during summer holidays. Five of the graduates work as research assistants in the department. In addition, a graduate who is a research assistant at the Department of Eastern Languages and Literatures at Istanbul Medeniyet University is currently continuing his doctoral education in the department within the scope of ÖYP. Moreover, there are two research assistant graduates working at Ankara University, Faculty of Language, History and Geography, and Istanbul University. Eighteen of the graduates are still studying in the master's program and 8 of them are continuing their education in the doctoral program. In addition to this, 15 graduates are still continuing their postgraduate education in Korea, and there are also graduates who have graduated from master's degree in Korea and have started a doctoral program. Many of our graduates also work in various companies in Türkiye such as Hyundai, Samsung, LG, KIA, Posco Steel Factory, Daewoo and Tufanbeyli Hydroelectric Power Plant, Ceragem Massage Beds Company, Istanbul 3rd Bridge Construction, Howon, Hyosung. There are approximately ten graduates currently working in various positions at Turkish Airlines and Korean Airlines. There are also graduates working at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and the Korean Cultural Center.
